FAQs

What does Branches to Roots do?

Branches to Roots designs meaningful Southern Italy and Italian roots journeys for travelers who want more than a generic itinerary. We help you experience ancestral towns, family stories, hidden villages, sacred places, regional food traditions, and the Southern Italy most travelers never discover.

We recommend, interpret, curate, and connect. You travel with more clarity, confidence, and meaning.

Do you book flights, hotels, tours, or handle payments?

No. Branches to Roots is not a travel agency. We do not handle your money or make reservations on your behalf.

Instead, we tell you what to book, why it fits, what to reserve first, and how to avoid the mistakes most travelers do not know they are making. You stay in control of every reservation while still receiving expert guidance, cultural interpretation, and thoughtful design.

We already booked flights or accommodations. Can you still help?

Yes. Many travelers come with some pieces already in place. We can work around what is confirmed, assess whether the existing plan supports the journey you want, and design the remaining experience around it.

If something already booked is likely to create stress, wasted time, awkward pacing, or missed opportunity, we will say so clearly and suggest better options where possible.

I know my family’s town. Which service is right for me?

If you already know the ancestral town and want help turning that visit into something meaningful, the Homecoming Journey is usually the right fit.

If you want the hometown visit woven into a larger multi-day experience of family story, regional culture, sacred places, food traditions, and belonging, the Homecoming & Heritage Journey is the better choice.

We think we know the town, but we are not completely sure. What should we do first?

If you want the hometown visit woven into a larger multi-day experience of family story, regional culture, sacred places, food traditions, and belonging, the Homecoming & Heritage Journey is the better choice. The Hometown Discovery Review is designed for this situation. It is a limited-scope ancestry feasibility review. We study the documents, family clues, and records you already have to determine whether there is enough evidence to identify or narrow down the likely hometown.

It is not open-ended genealogy. It is the smartest next step when you want to know whether a true homecoming journey is possible.

Online research can provide options. It cannot tell you what fits your family, your pace, your story, your emotional goals, or your region.

Why use Branches to Roots instead of researching online or using AI?

It cannot always tell you which town will feel anticlimactic, which church matters, which route is unrealistic, which village is magical at sunset, or how to shape a hometown visit into something that actually feels like coming home.

Branches to Roots brings judgment, interpretation, Southern Italy depth, and trusted local connections.

Can you plan for aging parents, mobility concerns, sensory sensitivity, or neurodivergent travel needs?

Yes. Thoughtful pacing is one of the most valuable parts of this work.

We can build in better walking rhythms, reduced transitions, quieter options, rest windows, meal timing, lower-stimulation choices, realistic daily flow, and backup plans. This kind of design usually requires more planning time, but it can transform a stressful trip into one that feels steady, safe, and deeply enjoyable.

How far in advance should we start?

Ideally, begin several months before travel, especially if you want the best lodging options, the right local guide, strong restaurant reservations, or a once-in-a-lifetime heritage experience done thoughtfully.

If your trip is closer, we may still be able to help, but options narrow as dates approach.

What do you need before beginning?

We will ask for a clear sense of who is traveling, approximate dates, your budget comfort zone, what you already know, what is already booked, and what matters most.

For ancestry-related work, we will also ask for family documents, names, dates, stories, and clues you already have. The more specific and candid you are, the more tailored and useful the work will be.

What will we receive?

That depends on the package, but you may receive a thoughtful written plan, pacing guidance, recommended places to stay, transportation suggestions, cultural notes, hometown or regional context, meaningful places to visit, dining recommendations, facilitated local guide introductions when appropriate, and practical next steps.

The goal is simple: you should feel that someone who understands the place, the story, and the stakes has thought carefully on your behalf.
